UPDATED 4:20 p.m. ET

Peter Theo Curtis, an American journalist, has been freed in Syria after nearly two years of being held captive. He had been kidnapped shortly after crossing over from Turkey into Syria in October 2012.

“Particularly after a week marked by unspeakable tragedy, we are all relieved and grateful knowing that Theo Curtis is coming home after so much time held in the clutches of Jabhat Al-Nusrah,” U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry said in a statement. “For two years, this young American has been separated from his family.”
