First American actress to win France’s Oscar equivalent is … Kristen Stewart


LOS ANGELES — The French are like opinions: trying to understand them can make you crazy.

And so we simply accepted Friday that Twilight star Kristen Stewart became the first American actress ever to win a César Award, France’s most prestigious film honor, their equivalent of an OscarC’est la vie.

Stewart won Best Supporting Actress for her role in Clouds of Sils Maria, a German-French-Swiss English-language co-production written and directed by Olivier Assayas, with French star Juliette Binoche in the lead role.

Lest we think Stewart now towers over the likes of Meryl Streep or Elizabeth Taylor in the eyes of the French, keep in mind that only French films make the top categories at the César Awards, now in their 40th year …
