Muslims seek to dispel stereotypes after North Carolina murders


RALEIGH, North Carolina — Driving home to Charlotte after a funeral for three Muslim students who were shot and killed in Chapel Hill, North Carolina on Tuesday, Kareem Abdelnabi looked at the passenger in his car (me) and asked an honest question: Why has the media been hesitant to call the murders a hate crime?

The three students—Deah Barakat, his wife Yusor Mohammad Abu-Salha and her sister Razan Mohammad Abu-Salha—were allegedly murdered by 46-year old Craig Stephen Hicks, an avowed atheist, at an apartment near University of North Carolina’s Chapel Hill campus.
