‘Shaq Fu’ Sequel Will Try to Be Actually Good

If there are still fans of Shaquille O’Neal horrendous ’90s fighting game debut Shaq Fu, which even an EA executive called “an abomination,” then somewhere, someone is reveling in the fact the game is getting a sequel.

The $450,000 IndieGoGo campaign for Shaq Fu: A Legend Reborn ended on Tuesday a few thousand dollars over its funding goal. The project was a collaboration between Big Deez Productions — a team made of developers who’ve worked on projects like Halo, Street Fighter and Battlefield — and O’Neal himself.

The original Shaq Fu was published in 1994 for the Sega Genesis, Master System and Super Nintendo. It featured 22-year-old Shaquille O’Neal in Tokyo, where he is headed to a basketball tournament. When Shaq enters a karate dojo, he is sucked into another dimension and must save a little boy from an evil mummy. It’s a game that doesn’t warrant a second playthrough 20 years later, but it elicits extreme nostalgia among fans or the 90s-obsessed. …
