“Fake news” had its shining moment on the political hill in 2016, but anyone who’s been around Hollywood long enough knows that ginned-up movie and TV “news” has been a cottage industry for more than a century. This year, Hollywood’s fake movie news was as phony and fulsome as ever.

Up in Silicon Valley, they call it “vaporware”: Projects announced so prematurely that they’re more than likely to die in development. Showbiz stories, built on dreams and funny-money, are flimsier still.

And there are dozens of progress points at which industry publications — “trades,” in the local lingo — report in. Writer hired to punch up a script? Item! Studio courts A-list actress for beloved franchise? Item!
