Tom Petty says the Sam Smith controversy was a ‘musical accident’


Tom Petty has issued a statement about his recent settlement with Sam Smith, in which Smith will pay him royalties for “Stay With Me.”

“Stay With Me” began dominating radio waves last summer, and fans were quick to point out that his tune sounded extremely similar to Tom Petty’s classic hit single “I Won’t Back Down,” which was released in 1989 and co-written by ELO’s Jeff Lynne
