White House wants FCC to break up cable box monopolies


The White House has thrown its support behind the Federal Communication Commission’s efforts to open up the cable box industry to third-party companies.

In a blog post on cable boxes and competition, the White House announced on Friday that it’s “calling on the FCC to open up set-top cable boxes to competition. This will allow for companies to create new, innovative, higher-quality, lower-cost products.” President Barack Obama also issued an Executive Order that calls on government agencies like the FCC to “make further progress through specific, pro-competition executive actions that empower and inform consumers, workers, and entrepreneurs.” …
