Regret. That’s the one word that comes to mind as I finish reading Leonard: My Fifty-Year Friendship with a Remarkable Man the new biography of Leonard Nimoy by his long-time Star Trek co-star William Shatner (with co-writer David Fisher).

Together, Nimoy and Shatner created one of the most memorable on-screen (small and big) pairings of all time. As Mr. Spock and Captain James T. Kirk, they crossed star systems together for decades. Meanwhile the men who inhabited those roles orbited each other like a pair of similarly sized planets, with the Star Trek brand as their sun

The show’s gravitational pull was something Nimoy and Shatner never escaped. Its cultural influence shaped their lives and a decades-long friendship. (The original series celebrates its 50th anniversary this year.) …
